Back to School

So it's the first day of school again for most kids in South Africa. I have a 12-year old daughter who, unfortunately, has been shunted around from school to school over the past few years, no fault of her own! She is starting at her new school today, in Grade 7, and my wife and I dropped her off this morning. The funny thing about children is that they are tougher than we think!
We all know how daunting it can be to start a new job, meet the new colleagues, the new boss, learn the new rules, dress codes, office politics etc etc... Some of us struggle with this even though we have done it many times! I was expecting all sorts of drama this morning, but to my surprise, she couldn't wait to wave us away so that she could jump headfirst into the system.

I was quite taken aback, and the more I thought about it, the more I realised that she has taught me another valuable lesson! WHAT ARE YOU AFRAID OF? We tend to fear all things new, it's in our nature, but ultimately we find ourselves adapting and changing automatically, and before we know it we're part of the "furniture". I come back to words that a good friend on Twitter, @IsisGuardian, told me the other day when we were discussing an issue with the Post Office - she said: "Will it matter in a year's time? If not, what is there to stress about?"

Aaah, so wise! And so true! Go forth, readers! Be braver than your kids! Fortune, or at least contentment, favors those of us who are! :)

Eventually deciding to write a couple of books was pretty brave of me, I think! Check them out here! Thanks for listening, and please share with your friends!
